Gousto Review: The UK’s Most Reviewed Meal Kit — With Ingredient Freshness and Subscription Billing Caveats

Gousto’s most specific documented strength: a customer who has been with Gousto for six years describes it plainly — “yes I have had delivery issues, missing ingredients and some less than fresh produce. But minor problems and mostly sorted out with little hassle.” That six-year loyalty through acknowledged imperfection is the clearest signal of what Gousto actually delivers: genuine recipe variety, mostly fresh ingredients, easy-to-follow cards, and compensation when things go wrong — not perfection, but reliable enough for a six-year household subscription. With 50,284 Trustpilot reviews and 50+ weekly recipe options, Gousto is the UK’s most verified meal kit brand. The documented honest caveats: Evri delivery is consistently flagged as the least reliable courier option in the network, a vinegar sachet has leaked over fresh produce in multiple documented consecutive boxes for the same buyer, and the billing system charges for boxes buyers didn’t select — then refuses to cancel even when called 10 minutes after payment is taken.

✅ 50,284 Trustpilot reviews — the largest verified review base of any UK meal kit brand. At this volume, the quality pattern is statistically reliable rather than curated.

✅ 50+ weekly recipe options covering vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free — the breadth of dietary accommodation is documented as a specific differentiator over competitors who offer fewer weekly options

✅ Six-year subscriber loyalty documented — a buyer who acknowledges issues, gets them resolved, and stays for six years is the clearest available signal of genuine service-value delivery over time

✅ Ingredient quality praised when fresh — “great quality food, easy to follow recipes” and “high quality ingredients, easy to cook, delivered to your door in a timely manner” represent the majority outcome when the freshness is right

✅ Customer service resolves most issues quickly — “good response if any issues with the options or delivery” and “occasional something is damaged on arrival however the super customer service sort it out quickly” are consistent majority notes

✅ Recipe cards are consistently excellent — “the recipe cards are good” appears even in mixed-quality reviews, suggesting the recipe development quality is more consistent than the ingredient sourcing

✅ Vegan and plant-based options specifically praised — “we’re vegan and there are great plant-based meal choices every week” represents genuine dietary accommodation rather than token inclusion

✅ AI personalisation system learns preferences over time — Gousto’s machine learning-based recommendation engine improves meal suggestions with account history, reducing the selection effort over repeated subscription periods

❌ Evri delivery is consistently flagged as unreliable — “when Gousto chooses Evri for delivery, they almost always deliver really late” per a Trustpilot buyer. Buyers cannot control which courier Gousto assigns.

❌ Packaging failures causing cross-contamination are documented — “we’ve now received our second box where a sachet of vinegar has leaked all over the items and fresh produce, as well as a missing bag of spinach and kale” — a consecutive packaging failure from the same buyer signals a systemic packing issue rather than a one-off.

❌ Billing without meal selection and refusal to cancel — “Gousto has a habit of failing to notify customers that their order needs selecting, then simply taking payment and refusing to cancel, refund, or even allow you to choose your meals once the payment has been processed. I called just 10 minutes after the payment was taken yet was told it was impossible to cancel the box.” This is a specific documented billing pattern that has generated multiple formal complaints.

❌ Two payments taken on reactivation — a six-year subscriber who reactivated after a pause found “two payments were taken out on two different days for two different amounts” with customer service unable to explain the discrepancy clearly.

❌ Ingredient freshness is variable — “the quality of ingredients is poor” and “produce being past its best, slimy, or discolored upon arrival” appear consistently enough in the minority complaint base to represent a real quality control concern rather than isolated bad luck.

❌ Customer service agent quality is uneven — a specific complaint about an agent who “repeatedly talked over me, claimed she was the complaints department, refused to explain the complaints process, and despite me asking several times to speak to someone else, I was denied” — unprofessional conduct at a specific interaction level.

The Recipe Quality — Gousto's Consistent Strength

Gousto’s recipe development is the brand’s most consistently praised element across all review platforms. “Easy to follow,” “restaurant quality using clear recipe cards,” and “why make life complicated” per a five-star Trustpilot reviewer capture the experience. The 50+ weekly options mean even longtime subscribers can find genuinely new recipes each week, and the dietary filter system makes weekly selection faster as subscriber history develops. Recipe cards are praised even in reviews that criticize ingredient freshness — the development quality is more reliable than the sourcing execution.

Ingredient Freshness — The Variable

The freshness question is where Gousto’s quality is most variable. The majority experience is positive — “high quality ingredients” and “everything fresh” are the dominant notes. The minority experience includes slimy produce, discolored vegetables, and garlic “cloves that are the little flat bits from a bulb” — the bottom-quality pieces rather than fresh healthy ones. Freshness appears to correlate with delivery routing — boxes that travel through the most handling steps show the most freshness degradation, and Evri-routed deliveries are specifically associated with the worst freshness outcomes.

The Billing System — The Critical Pre-Subscribe Warning

Gousto’s subscription model requires weekly meal selection within a window. If selection isn’t made, Gousto charges for a box and — critically — refuses to cancel or refund even immediately after payment. This is the brand’s most documented source of frustration in the negative review base, and it is a specific operational design decision rather than a customer service failure. Subscribers who understand this and set calendar reminders for the selection window avoid the problem entirely. Subscribers who expect to be contacted before being charged are consistently caught out.

Delivery — The Courier Variable

Gousto does not give subscribers control over courier selection, and the performance gap between couriers is significant. DPD and Hermes deliveries draw positive comments; Evri deliveries draw consistent complaints about late arrival that affects ingredient freshness. The practical mitigation: when your box is shipped and Evri is the courier, be ready for later delivery than the stated window and check ingredient freshness more carefully on arrival.
